Cyprus Intends to Block Turkey’s Accession Process to the EU

The President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades said that the authorities intend to block Turkey’s accession process to the European Union as long as Ankara does not recognize Cyprus as a sovereign state, BBC reports.

“I presented the chairman (of the European Council Donald) Tusk our position that the Republic of Cyprus does not agree to the opening of any negotiation chapters, if Turkey does not fulfill its obligations under the agreement,” Anastasiadis said.

The head of Cyprus met with Tusk to discuss the deal between the EU and Turkey aimed at curbing the influx of migrants to Europe.
